I hope you read all of Psalm 128 during your devotional time today. With its pictures of contented labor and happy home life, this could really be called “The Working Man’s Psalm.” What’s the secret to this happiness? Staying in good with the real Boss!
God never intended work to be a bring burden. Remember: He gave Adam his first job before Adam sinned. God knew that Man had it in him to build and create.
When you’re abiding in Christ and walking in God’s Spirit, His presence in your life can restore work to the paradise it was meant to be. From personal experience I have learned that it is easier to work hard after you’ve found the Lord than it is before! Without God, work doesn’t have much meaning. A man is only trading his time for money to sustain himself on earth. Without God, some jobs seem to harden men into animals.
The trucking business is a rough occupation. I remember once stopping by a truck garage where a couple of mechanics were working on a diesel motor from a big Mack truck. They were full of grease from head to foot. (No way to avoid that if you’re working on a truck!) The garage was hot, and these truckers were cursing the weather as well as the broken engine. The men were standing around telling trashy jokes. Trashy pictures hung on the walls. Grease, sweat, thrash, pornography and foul language combined to make that garage a living hell.
Now, the tucking business doesn’t have to be like this. I have Christian friends in the trucking business, and the atmosphere of their shops is completely different from the one I just described.
If your work situation is rough, you don’t have to get caught up in it. Be honest about your Christian walk and standards. If you’re consistent, people will respect you for it. But best of all, you’ll stay out from under the curse of sin. Work will become a paradise as you use it in service to Gods’ Kingdom!
“For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee” (Psalm 128:2).
