2012: The End Is Near

Matthew 24:3-44 – “[As Christ] sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? 4  And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5  For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. 6  And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7  For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. 8  All these are the beginning of sorrows. 9  Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake. 10  And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. 11  And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 12  And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 13  But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. 14  And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. 15  When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) 16  Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: 17  Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18  Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. 19  And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20  But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21  For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22  And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect’s sake those days shall be shortened. 23  Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. 24  For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 25  Behold, I have told you before. 26  Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 27  For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 28  For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. 29  Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30  And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31  And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32  Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: 33  So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. 34  Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. 35  Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. 36  But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37  But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38  For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39  And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 40  Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 41  Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. 42  Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. 43  But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. 44  Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

In the past year, the world has been deluged with predictions of the return of Christ – specifically, by the words of a certain man named Harold Camping. His failed predictions of the return of Christ – once in May, and then again in October, of 2011, serve as yet one more example of the futility of man’s attempts to predict Armageddon, and the end of the world.

In 2012, some have predicted – whether in jest or seriously – that the world will end in December, in the timekeeping of the Mayan Calendar.

Christ, our final authority on end time events, made it clear, not only in Matthew 24, but throughout the New Testament Scriptures, that no man can know the day or the hour of His return. This includes the events of the Rapture, and culminates in the replacing of this old system with an entirely new, eternal Universe, which the saints of God will inhabit forever.

And yet, men can’t help but speculate as to when this end of all things will come.

As this new year comes upon us, I’d like to encourage all my readers to research, Scripturally, this topic of end-times prophecy. Several resources are available online; however, not all resources are reliable.

So, to facilitate this study, allow me to start you off by recommending some articles I’ve posted here on ProliferateTruth.Net, regarding the events of the end times. Simply click on the links provided below for the information you will need to begin your study of end-times prophecy:

An Open Letter to Harold Camping

Posted by ProliferatingTruth on May 22, 2011

An Editorial Note:  Since I drafted this post, another man, by the name of Wyman Richardson, has drafted a similar note, entitled "An Open Letter to Camping’s Followers." You may view that post by clicking here. Bro. Richardson has drafted a very compassionate and understanding letter, appealing to those who have been disappointed by the failure of Harold Camping’s prophecy of Christ’s return to rapture His saints to come true on May 21st, 2011.

So, faithful readers, here’s my Open Letter to Harold Camping:

—————————————————–

Good morning, sir.

Today is Sunday, May 22nd, 2011. I don’t think I need to point out, that you – and we – are all still here.

I was taken back, although not surprised, by your prediction that May 21st would see the Rapture – Christ returning to gather up His saints – and the beginning of the subsequent 7-Year Tribulation Period, prophesied throughout the Scriptures. However, I was neither taken back, nor surprised, that this did not actually occur.

Regardless of how accurate you may feel your figures were leading up to May 21st, sir, the very Scriptures themselves, which you claim to know, believe, and obey, make it clear, in numerous passages, that we can never know – and we will never know – the day or the hour of the beginning of the events of the end times.

Many passages of Scripture set this forth very plainly.

For instance, Christ Himself acknowledged that even He, in His humanity, was unable to predict His very own return. We read in Mark 13:3-37, especially verses 32-37, "Of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. 33  Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. 34  For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. 35  Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: 36  Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. 37  And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch."

It doesn’t take a Doctor’s Degree in Divinity to understand that the return of Christ is, indeed, imminent – it has been for over two thousand years – and that it is, in fact, an event which cannot be predicted by numerology, or by any other means. As we’ve stated already, Scripture is filled with references to this fact. See the following passages, as well:

Matthew 24, especially verses 36-42: "Of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
Mat 24:37  But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 42  Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come."

Matthew 25, especially verse 13: "Ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh."

1 Thessalonians 5:1-11, especially verse 2: "Yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night."

2 Peter 3, especially verse 10: "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

Certainly this is not an exhaustive list of the doctrine of Scripture regarding end-times prophecy. But it’s enough to inform us that, one day, Christ will return for His saints – He will snatch them away, to meet Him in the air – and that, this will be an event which will happen in God’s good time, and on God’s own schedule.

I’m sure millions of people – both Christians and pagans alike – are gloating right now, rubbing in the fact that the return of Christ didn’t happen as you predicted it would. This particular note is not meant to be a gloat, but a reminder – that to predict an event that even Christ Himself couldn’t predict is a blight upon the reputation of the Church around the world (which, may I say, is alive and kicking, and saving souls to this very day).

I’m no intellectual. I’m not even a Pastor. But as a born-again Christian, who’s concerned about the reputation of the church, I feel I must say this: Your failure to abide by Scriptural truth in regard to the timing of the return of our blessed Savior Jesus Christ has given occasion to the enemies of God to blaspheme (see 2 Samuel 12:14), just as many in the past have done by their erroneous predictions, as well.

Some date-setters who’ve attempted to set the date of Christ’s return have, finally, repented of their error, and have, rather, referred to the signs of the times, which indicate a near return of Christ – an attitude which is far more accurate, and vastly more preferable, to setting a date that will, predictably, come, and go, and amount to no grand thing.

If you’re a sincerely born-again Christian, I hope you’ll take your lumps on this one, and learn from your experience.

And, I must needs remind myself, that, come Eternity, we’ll all have a good laugh together about this. It’s just another day. But please, sir, be cautious about your future predictions.

Have a Blessed Sunday, everyone!

Proliferate Truth.
