“Reproofs of Instruction are the Way of Life”

Proverbs 6:23 – “For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life.”

I. “Reproofs of instruction are THE way of life.”

  • Notice the wording of this verse: Reproofs are the way of life.
  • Reproofs are simply a requirement of life; they simply must be done.
  • A life free of reproof is a life free of self-discipline, free of self-restraint, free of responsibility, and ultimately, free of reward and blessing.

Proverbs 6:20-23 – “My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother: 21  Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. 22  When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. 23  For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:”

What Do Discipline and Reproof Mean?

Proverbs 29:15 - “The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.”

Introductory Thoughts:

  • A child left to himself has questions, but he might have no clue who to go to for answers.

  • He has questions, but perhaps nobody seems concerned enough to answer his questions.

  • Perhaps nobody seems to have the time to sit down and guide them through their problems.

  • Or maybe, the child doesn’t want guidance, and the parent doesn’t want the difficulty of trying to guide and instruct their child in the right ways of God.

  • It is perhaps this last scenario that Proverbs 29:15 is talking about: “The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

  • Let’s look at some of Solomon’s insights into the fool as his life relates to this passage:
