I. Undeserved Salvation

Nothing we could ever do could earn us a spot in heaven.

Isaiah 64:6 – But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Romans 3:10 – There is none righteous, no, not one.

Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Romans 14:23 – Whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Galatians 2:21 – For if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Galatians 3:9 – And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness of God by faith.

James 2:10 – Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

James 4:17 – Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

1 John 5:17 – All unrighteousness is sin.

Bible Version Comparisons, Part 8: Justification by Faith in Jesus Christ Alone

Acts 8:37 – “And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

New versions of the Bible omit this verse, and alter others, in order to change justification by faith, to salvation through works. Many versions delete “by himself” in Hebrews 1:3, in order to permit faith in another mediator, such as Mary. The omission of “on me,” in John 6:47, allows any belief.

What Does It Mean to be “Justified” Before God, Part III

Galatians 2:15-21 – “We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”

What Does It Mean to be “Justified” Before God, Part II

Romans 8:1 - “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

Justification is Revealed in the Gospel – In Romans 1:16-17 Paul states, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith.” Righteousness in verse 17 is defined in Strong’s concordance as “justification.” The Gospel, therefore, is that which reveals the means by which man is to be justified.

What Does it Mean to be “Justified” Before God?

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 – “Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”

I.   The MEANING of Justification

  • The dictionary meaning: A presentation intended to justify or defend something.
  • The relative meaning: "A change in a man’s relation or standing before God;" "a change from guilt and condemnation to acquittal and acceptance;" "justification, with the change of [one's] standing before God."
  • The Scriptural meaning: "to declare, or to cause to appear innocent or righteous," Deuteronomy 25:1; to "reckon righteous," Romans 4:2-8, or "not to impute iniquity," Psalms 32:2; "to set forth as righteous; to declare righteous in a legal sense; to put a person in a right relation.;" a justified person is "declared to be righteous and treated as such;" "the judicial act of God whereby those who put faith in Christ are declared righteous in His eyes, and free from guilt and punishment."

Only Christ can justify us before God, and this justification entails two elements which are an assurance to the believer.
