Qualifications for church leadership, like so many other issues of the day, are a sticking point in theology for many people, for many different reasons. Some hold that neither pastors nor deacons are allowed to be single, citing Scripture to support their view. Others believe that perhaps a deacon is allowed to be single, but not a pastor. Others believe the exact inverse of that theory, that the deacon must be married to hold that position, and that the pastor is allowed to be single, citing that very same passage of Scripture. Some also believe that evangelists or missionaries must be married, others that they may be single. With the existence of so many different viewpoints, and so many seemingly reasonable lines of logic to prove each one, the burden becomes not to determine who’s right, but to determine what can be proven Scripturally, to either support or disprove any man’s notion of the proper qualifications of any of these offices.
